Coming early to War and Peace?
Coming early to War and Peace? We've lots of things you can do while you're waiting for the show to start! How about this walk to start, organised exclusively for War and Peace:
Front-Line Folkestone
Monday 14 July at 2pm - an 8 mile circular walk of Folkestone and Shorncliffe on which you will hear about people, places and events that Folkestone witnessed during WW1.
Meet in the car park of the Central Railway Station, Folkestone (CT19 5HB, TR209 364). You can get here easily from the Westenhanger train station if you don't want to drive!
The walk includes Shorncliffe Military Cemetery, follows part of the route that troops took to depart to the Western Front and passes the bomb site that precipitated a major rethink of home defense. It will pass places which provided rest, recuperation, treatment and training for military and civilian personnel who served on the Frontline.
This is mostly an urban walk but there is a short distance on unmade paths. Mostly easy going but a steep-stepped climb up from the ‘coast’ to the Leas.
The walk is led by Geoff Rambler and experienced walk leader in Kent who leads fundraising walks in partnership with the Kent Messenger. This year his walks - and associated book - “If Walks could Talk” - are raising money for the Royal British Legion to support their work in Kent.
Geoff stresses he’s not a historian albeit well he’s been informed by local historians, so he will be leading a ‘walk with chat’
The walk is free but there will be a collection at the end for the Royal British Legion. If you are interested in taking part in the walk please email Geoff at [email protected]. More details can be found on his website www.geofframbler.co.uk.
